3 Indie Patterns I Want to Sew Now

3 Indie Patterns I Want to Sew Now

Bianca Silva

Have you ever looked at a pattern and thought, "Yes, this is exactly what my wardrobe needs!"

That’s exactly how I feel about the three indie sewing patterns I’m sharing today.

These patterns have been in my collection for years, and I can’t stop thinking about them. If you're planning your next make, maybe one of these will inspire your next project too.

Pattern 1: The Calvin Wrap Dress by True Bias

I’ve had my eye on the Calvin Wrap Dress for quite a while, and I actually bought it two years ago.

It's a wrap-style top or dress with spaghetti straps and a simple, clean design.

What draws me to it is how effortlessly wearable it looks, especially in the warmer months.

There’s a fair bit of bias binding involved (which I associate with slightly burnt fingers!), but I’m willing to brave it because the result will be worth it.

I'm planning to use a black viscose fabric with cream florals that I got from Abakhan...ONLY £1 a meter!

I normally steer away from black, but I think this dress could layer beautifully with a coloured t-shirt underneath or a sweater over the top in cooler months.

Pattern 2: The Fiona Sundress by Closet Core Patterns

Next up is the Fiona Sundress, which I bought three years ago and still haven’t made up.

I love everything about this pattern, the princess seams, the crisscross back straps, and the subtle V-shaped neckline. Oh, and did I mention the 21 buttons for the midi version?

Even though it looks tailored, the pattern doesn’t require much fabric, just under 2 meters in my size, likely even less since I’ll need to adjust for my height. I keep picturing it in a dreamy blue viscose-linen blend that’s been patiently waiting in my stash.

I’ll definitely do a toile of the bodice first because the fit is quite structured. I’m also excited about all the topstitching...one of my favourite parts of the sewing process!

Just like the Calvin Wrap, the Fiona Sundress is super versatile. It’ll look great in the summer but can easily transition into autumn with a tee or sweater layered in.

Pattern 3: The Philippa Jeans by Anna Allen

Last but not least, jeans! The Philippa Jeans pattern has been in my stash for three years as well.

I was looking for a good jeans pattern and this one stood out because of its high waist, slim leg, and shaping darts around the waist.

I’ve made a toile before, and while the fit was mostly good, it was tight around the calves, so I’ll definitely make another toile before cutting into my final fabric. I’ve chosen a soft pink stretch denim from Jenny Stitches. It’s got just enough give to handle those tricky calf areas.

Although I’ve hemmed many pairs of jeans, I’ve never actually sewn a full pair from scratch.

I’m excited to finally dive into denim sewing. These jeans will be a wardrobe staple, perfect with trainers, boots, or sandals.

Which Pattern Should I Start With?

I’m hoping to tackle at least one of these for the #SewBloodPressure25 sewing challenge I’m hosting on Instagram. (link: here where you can win a Sewing Machine!)

Let me know in the comments: Which pattern is your favourite? Your vote just might sway me on where to start!

Thanks for reading and happy sewing!

Bye for now,
