5 Tips to Grow Your Confidence in Sewing

Feeling overwhelmed by your sewing machine? You’re not alone!

When I first took mine out of the box, I had no idea where to begin.

My poor kitchen towel became the first "test subject" to a few crooked rows of stitches and it still lives to tell the tale!

Confidence behind the machine doesn’t come overnight, but the good news is: it can be built with small, simple steps.

5 Tips to Grow Your Confidence in Sewing

1. Master the Straight Stitch

If you learn to sew a straight line, you're already halfway there!

It may seem basic, but nailing the straight stitch sets the foundation for everything else.

The key? Stop staring at the needle.

Instead, focus on a fixed point on your needle plate or presser foot. Keep the edge of your fabric aligned with that point.

Too tricky to eyeball?

Use washi tape or masking tape to mark the line on your machine...it’s a total game-changer!

Bonus Tip: Learn what seam allowance your project requires.

For example, quilting usually uses a ¼” allowance, while garments typically use ⅝”. This ensures your stitches hold and your project doesn’t come apart at the seams (literally!).

2. Learn to Backstitch

One of the easiest and most impactful skills: backstitching.

Also called a reverse stitch, this technique locks your stitches in place at the beginning and end of a seam.

Most machines have a button or lever for this, just go two stitches backward, then continue forward.

If you’re unsure where your backstitch control is, check your machine’s manual.

Don’t have one? A quick Google search with your machine’s model will point you in the right direction.

3. Thread Your Machine with Confidence

Threading your machine confidently is a huge win.

Yes, it might take a few tries (and a bit of patience), but once you get it, it’s empowering.

Try practicing threading your machine once a day until it becomes second nature. You will be surprised how quickly it clicks!

4. Don’t Skip the Pressing

Here’s one I overlooked for a long time: pressing your seams.

I used to wonder why my projects looked…a little sad.

Once I started using an iron to press as I went, everything changed. The results were cleaner, crisper, and way more professional-looking.

Think of pressing as part of the sewing, not just an afterthought.

5. Finish a Simple Project

There’s nothing like the feeling of finishing a project.

Choose something simple like a scrunchie, tote bag, or zippered pouch, and commit to completing it.

The goal isn’t perfection; it’s momentum.

You will learn so much by seeing a project through from start to finish.

Final Thoughts

Sewing is a journey, not a race.

Every expert you admire once felt unsure threading their machine or sewing their first seam.

What matters most is that you keep going. Confidence builds with each stitch, each project, and each small win.

Thanks for reading and happy sewing!
Bye for now, B! xx
