My Favourite Way to Make a Scrunchie!
Is it just me, or does every handmade outfit need a matching scrunchie? I will answer that for you - YES!
Over the years, I have made dozens of scrunchies, and once I discovered this method, I never looked back. It’s fast, beginner-friendly, and the perfect way to use up fabric scraps from your sewing projects.
Bonus: your outfit gets an instant style upgrade with a matching accessory!
If you have never sewn a scrunchie before or you are looking for a more efficient method: this tutorial is for you!
What You Will Need:
Fabric: At least 24” x 5” (but you can adjust depending on your scraps and scrunchie size preference)
Elastic: 7–8” long, ½” wide (my go-to size for a secure hold)
Sewing machine
Safety pin + clips
Basic sewing tools (scissors, thread, etc.)
Choosing the Right Size Scrunchie
There are so many ways to customize your scrunchie:
- Want more scrunch? Use more length.
- Prefer a chunkier scrunchie? Add more width.
- Try experimenting with different sizes until you find your ideal scrunchie style!
Step-by-Step: How I Sew My Favourite Scrunchie
Step1:
Cut your fabric to at least 24" x 5".
Step 2:
Fold the fabric in half, right sides together, matching the short edges.
Step 3:
Sew the short edge with a ¼” seam allowance to form a loop.
Step 4:
Lay the seam flat, then fold the outer layer of fabric inward to meet the middle — this creates a tube for sewing the long edge.
Step 5:
Align the long raw edges, matching seams and clipping in place.
Step 6:
Sew around the tube with a ¼” seam allowance, pulling the inside fabric forward as you go.
IMPORTANT: Leave a small gap (about 2”) for turning the scrunchie right side out.
Step 7:
Insert the elastic using a safety pin to thread it through the tube. Clip the other end so it doesn’t slip through.
Step 8:
Join the elastic ends and stitch them securely.
Step 9:
Turn the scrunchie right side out through the opening. This is the MOST satisfying part!
Step 10:
Close the gap with a few small stitches (hand-sewn or machine).
And That's It!
Now you have got a beautiful, handmade scrunchie to match your latest outfit.
I haven’t used another method since I learned this one...it’s just that good!
Do you make matching scrunchies for your handmade outfits? Or are you just now discovering how addicting this little accessory can be?
Thanks for reading and happy sewing!
Bye for now, B! xx
