Nearly There

The kids are off school for Easter holidays!

And how gorgeous has the weather been this week!

We have taken advantage of it and been outside for most of the time on bicycles and going to parks. 😎

This means I have not had much time to work on my current projects.

I knew they were off school this week, but it didn’t actually click in my head and I thought I would manage to do a lot more than I actually did.

I didn’t manage to finish my Sabina Skirt, but I did make a little progress.

I overlocked the sides and bottom of both skirt pieces because I want to have the edges need for when I fold the sides in to finish the side slits.

The front and back skirt pieces are also sewn together and thank goodness I marked where I wanted the sides slits to start! I would have forgotten to stop sewing at that point otherwise. 😅

I was also wondering if I should topstitch down both sides of the side seam. 🤔

Topstitching gives projects such a neat and professional finish, that I think it will actually look very nice.

And why did I think about doing this?

Since I am adding the side slits and I neat to stitch the seam down anyway, I thought continuing up the side might look nice.

Have you ever done this on a viscose skirt? If yes, what did you think about it? Yay or nay?

I thought I was going to finish the skirt in time for the warm weather, but the end of the week has gotten pretty cold and it doesn’t look like I will be needing the skirt for a little while now.  🙃

I also undertook a not-so-exciting project this week. 😅

A friend of ours asked me to shorten some black out curtains he had bought.

Although I don’t particularly enjoy doing this, our friend helps us out so much around the house with construction work.

He did the flooring in my sewing room, helped build some of the furniture and made a deck in our back garden to name a few of the jobs he has done around our house.

So rehemming 3 curtains felt like a minor job in comparison.

I also finally got onto ordering more yarn for my purple knitted sweater, the Gumdrops Sweater!

I only got one skein in each colour of the Yarnsmiths Merino DK Superwash because I had enough of the Yarnsmiths Kid Mohair Silk.

This allowed me to finish crocheting the red vertical rows on the front bodice and continue with the sleeves.

I figured out how to go about getting the sleeves to match stripes straight across the bodice.

And after trying it on with half the sleeve knitted, I was pretty pleased, so just continued!

I knit nearly ¾ of the sleeve and I think I am going to knit another repeat of the large block of stripes then finish off with ribbing.

If you’re interested in how I matched the stripes from the bodice to the sleeves, I used the colour that was at the bottom of the sleeve head to start the sequence.

This colour for me was the cream, but I actually picked up the stitches to start the sleeve in purple and then realised I should have done it with the cream.

I decided to not undo it and just continue and it looks ok, you can barely tell.

My website has been up and running for one week now and I want to thank all of you who visited and had a little look around! ♥️

If you have ever been to one of my Sew&Bond social sewing days, I would love it if you could please leave a review on the website to just give them a little boost.

The launch of my sewing pattern, Roma Necessaire, has not gone as well as I had hoped it would go.

I just need to remind myself I have only just started this journey and am a little fish in a BIG pond.

This is not putting me off though, so I am hoping to soon get back into working on my next design.

Something else on my agenda is that I started doing private sewing lessons! 😃

I am used to teaching in large groups, so doing 1-2-1 is something new to me!
And I was actually very nervous when I headed to my students house for the first session, but it all went smoothly!

I am so happy just to be able to share all the sewing knowledge I have gained over the years and help someone else start their creative journey!

This Week's Tip:

Spice Jars for Storage

This week I filmed a Youtube video sharing some of the ways I have managed to keep costs down when sewing.

One of these budget hacks is to use spice jars as storage.

My partner gets some of his spices at B&M (UK retailer) and they come in these small glass jars with a silver screw-top lid.

When he is finished with them, I wash and remove all the labels and they are perfect to use!

I have so many buttons and other sewing hardware lying around that are perfect to keep organised in these jars.

I then keep them in my drawer.

Yes, they do take up a little bit of space, but they are free, I have not had to spend money on specific little storage boxes.
