This can cause your fabric to shift, resulting in crooked or uneven seams. Instead, your hands should gently guide the fabric without forcing it, and your eyes should focus on the seam allowance guide on your sewing machine’s needle plate.
Focus on the Seam Guide, Not the Needle
Your sewing machine’s needle plate is your best friend when it comes to straight sewing.
It has built-in markings for common seam allowances like 1/4 inch, 5/8 inch, and more.
Pick the seam allowance your pattern or project calls for, and line up the raw edge of your fabric with that guide.
Once you’ve aligned your fabric, lower the needle into the fabric and put the presser foot down.
From that moment, ignore the needle and instead focus your eyes on that seam allowance line on the needle plate.
Keeping your fabric aligned with this line is the key to sewing straight.
Use Masking Tape for Extra Guidance
If your sewing machine’s seam guides don’t cover the seam allowance you need, or if you find it hard to focus on the small lines, masking tape can be a game-changer.
