Hello, hello!

How has the half term gone for you?

I’ve had a busy week with the kids at home!

I worked at Leon's for 2 days, had sewing students over on 3 different days, made my daughter’s Halloween outfit, tried to do some bits of my Janome outfit and I met up with sewing friends!

This weekend The Maker’s Market came to Wythenshawe where a couple of our sewing friends that come to Sew&Bond™ were running their first market stall!

So we arranged a few of us to meet up and show our support!

Millie and Anna worked for weeks on creating their unique pieces, we even saw them working on it during our Sew&Bond™ events the last couple of months.

I’m excited to share that I’m planning a gala in Manchester for all of us next year, in May! And yes...it already has a name: Sewn at Midnight Gala

Stitches of the Week

Violette Field Threads - Audrina Skirt and Tilly and The Buttons - Lyra

It’s no surprise it’s not finished yet!😂

I didn’t get to spend the hour or two everyday on it that I anticipated.

But it is coming along.

I had done most of the skirt earlier in the week but had to abandon it for a few days because I didn’t have 2 inch wide elastic.

I waited for Friday to go into work to get some but I have still not had the time to finish it.

The shirt is not even halfway either. 😂

The shoulder seams and the collar are done. I still need to sew the side seams, do the sleeves, buttonholes and sew the buttons on.

The collar is on though and I love it!😍

For another project, I want to make this same collar but wider and longer because I don’t feel this one is giving me the drama I wanted. I’m picturing some beading or sequins sewn onto it too.🤔

Anyway, for my Janome outfitI might be able to do some work on it tonight and hopefully I get some good hours to work on it on Monday and Tuesday.

Fabric: Red Swiss dot organza, red polycotton, red floral cotton lawn.

The Drama: It’s not finished!!😶

Sizing Details: Skirt size 6 - one size larger than measurements. Top size 2 - widened sleeves by ½ as they were too tight on a previous version.

BeeSilva - Wednesday Adams Dress Up

I left this one to the last minute, but I knew for a few weeks that my eldest wanted to dress up as Wednesday.

I finished it 2 days before Halloween which isn’t that bad really.

To make it I lengthened a t-shirt pattern to where my daughter wanted it and lowered the neckline a little. Then I took a peter pan collar from another pattern and altered it to fit the neckline of the dress.

I had some trouble hemming the dress with a zigzag stitch. I tried all my machines, used 2 different types of needles and it still didn’t work.

I ended up using a triple straight stitch which is a stretch stitch and that worked perfectly.

For the sleeves, instead of hemming them I folded the sleeve edges back twice like a zigzag, so I had one raw edge together with a fold. Then I overlocked it.

When I turned it the right way round, it looked like I had added a cuff.

It was a really simple make and I was pleased with the outcome, and so was my daughter!🥳

It is a little big for her but I think it works well so she can wear it just that little bit longer, even outside of dress up.

Fabric: Black scuba and white quilted jersey.

The Win: Finished in a morning plus I used stash fabric!💪

Skill Builder of the Week

Triple Straight Stitch AKA Triple Stretch Stitch

A triple straight stitch (stitch number 04 in the picture) is a stronger version of a regular straight stitch where the sewing machine sews 2 stitches forward, one stitch back, then another 2 forward and so on.

It’s visibly thicker and allows for some stretch which was perfect for hemming the scuba dress for my daughter where I was having issues with a zigzag stitch.

You can actually use this stitch in so many ways, and here are some of the times where you can make use of it:

For extra strength:

- Crotch seams

- Bag straps or handles

When you don’t want to use a zigzag stitch on stretch fabrics:

- Knit or jersey fabric where a regular straight stitch would pop

- Leggings, activewear and swimwear seams

Topstitching:

- Topstitching jeans or bags for a thicker, more defined line.

- Decorative topstitching (best suited for heavier fabric)
