In a ‘Everything Goes Wrong’ Phase

In a ‘Everything Goes Wrong’ Phase

Bianca Silva

Hello, hello!

I have a few goodies to show you this week.

I got some yarn last week but couldn’t show you it because I had to keep it secret until Wool Warehouse launched it.

But it’s out now!

They kindly sent me a few skeins of their latest launch which is the Yarnsmiths Merino Aran in Dusky Peach and I also got a skein of Yarnsmiths Merino Sock in Pistachio.

I couldn’t decide between this Dusky Peach and Copper, so I asked Wool Warehouse to choose for me, but I only found out when I opened my parcel. 🤭

I was very indecisive between these colours but I am so happy with what was sent out. 😍

The plan is to start a vest right after I finish my current sweater to match the Lander Pants I am currently making, and it is the perfect shade!

There was also a little fabric purchase that happened this week.

I got 9 different colours of felt because as I mentioned last week, I’m feeling all crafty this season.

I want to make some felt ornaments for the Christmas tree and decorate them with hand embroidery (which I’m rubbish at 😂) and beads.

I have quite a few ideas in mind in terms of shapes and colour combinations, so let’s see what actually comes out.

But that’s not all! Me and my girls did a mini shopping trip to Leon’s Fabrics.

A few years ago I made them pink and white gingham stockings which I’m not feeling at all anymore, so I want to upgrade them.

I briefed them before we entered so that no one would get overwhelmed. I told them I wanted to make the stockings with velvet fabric, I just wanted them to choose the colour.

And you can probably guess what colour they chose.

Pink.

We got some white fleece for the cuff and I think this combo is going to look just gorgeous.

Something I am considering is adding an applique to the front of each of them with their initials.

Stitches of the Week

True Bias - Lander Pants

I think I’m in one of those phases where things keep on going wrong! 😂

Last week I mentioned that I had a piece of fabric missing on my trouser leg because of pattern matching and I sewed my darts to the wrong side of the fabric twice.

This week it was the buttonholes!

First buttonhole, perfect. Second buttonhole, perfect. Third buttonhole, what a mess. 😂

It’s not the first time I’ve messed up buttonholes in this same way and it’s really frustrating because if you have had to unpick any before, you know what I mean.

My hand knocked the buttonhole lever sending the stitches back and it made the buttonhole shorter. I tried to stitch the missing bit I needed still using the buttonhole stitch, but it just made things messier.

When I removed the trousers from the machine, I saw on the wrong side that the fabric from the fly had folded and was caught in the stitches. 😵💫

So I just unpicked everything and it worked out right after. It doesn’t look as tidy as the other ones though.

As it stands, I’ve sewn the side seams. I basted them first to check the fit, as per instructions, and they fit really well.

The waistband is also attached so there’s not much left.

I need to sew the belt loops on, make one more buttonhole on the waistband, add buttons and do the hem.

I decided I am adding jeans buttons to these, so I popped to Hobbycraft to get some.

And I am going to keep the long length of the trouser legs. The missing piece of fabric made no difference because the seam allowance was 1 inch, so it worked out well. 🥳

Fabric: Light weight denim

The Drama: Messing up a buttonhole and catching the fabric in it!

The Win: Even though there have been mistakes along the way, I am still enjoying the process.

Sizing Details: Size 4

Take It or Leaf It Sweater - Karas Knit Eng

Wishful thinking indeed last week… my sweater is not finished.  😂

I did finish a sleeve though. 🎉

I left the cuff on the needles for the time being because I don’t know yet if I want to knit a few more rows of ribbing to make the folded cuff larger. The pattern says to do a tubular cast off which is a nicer edge than a simple cast off, but I want to keep in theme with the neckband.

So while that waits, I started on the second sleeve.

We were stuck in traffic in town this week for about an hour, and although it wasn’t very entertaining for the kids, I took advantage of the time and cracked on with the sweater.

If nothing else hinders me, I should have this finished by the end of next week!

Yarn: Yarnsmiths Create Super Chunky gifted by Wool Warehouse paired with Drops silver thread.

Size: XS

Needle Size: I am using a size 6mm for the ribbing and an 8mm needle for the body. The yarn suggests a 10mm for reference.

The Win: One sleeve down, and another on the go - I’m nearly finished!

Skill Builder of the Week

Marking Fabric

When you are working with fabric that’s difficult to tell the wrong side from the right side, the best thing to do is mark it.

This is especially important when you have pieces that are mirrored because you don’t want to end up having 2 left legs like I did with my Lander Pants.

To mark your fabric you don’t have to use anything fancy, you just want a visible mark so you don’t forget or get confused later on.

Depending on the colour of the fabric, I have used different methods for ease of visibility.

I’ve used chalk, which is my go-to, safety pins, and sticky notes.

Marking your fabric will just give you less headaches later.

Makers Spotlight

This week’s spotlight goes to @atelier.demi!

Demi made this beautiful colourful dress in a linen viscose fabric from Verhees Textiles.😍

She had made many versions of this pattern before, the Maison Cobalt Alma, but it was the first time she went for the full length dress with ruffles on the sleeves.

And it was worn for a special occasion - Demi’s 30th birthday!

Happy birthday Demi! 🎉

Want to be featured in my newsletter? Just reply with a pic of your make. I’d love to see what you’ve made!😍
